Northwood Around The World: Vietnam
In "Northwood Around the World", we showcase some of the captivating destinations visited by Northwood team members.

Location: Vietnam
Located in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is a country that is rich in history, landscapes, culture, and cuisines. The experience varies significantly by region, providing opportunities to visit hectic streets in the larger cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, explore the natural beauty of the famous Ha Long Bay, and learn about the dark history of the Vietnam War (or the American war as the Vietnamese call it). I loved my time in Vietnam, and I think it offers something for travelers with lots of different types of interests.
Highlights and Recommendations:
Places
- Ha Long Bay: A must do in Vietnam from my perspective. Take a cruise in the legendary Ha Long Bay to take in the views of the limestone cliffs, kayak in the calm waters, and experience local fishing villages.
- Hanoi: I’d recommend a stay in the walkable Old Quarter neighborhood to experience the hectic streets filled with motorbikes and enjoy some local cuisines at the tiny tables lining the sidewalks. I’d also suggest a visit to “Train Street” to watch a passenger train pass mere inches by you while you enjoy a local beer or coffee at one of the restaurants lining the street.
- Hoi An: It’s worth stopping at this lantern filled town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and having a custom suit or dress made at one of the hundreds of tailors in the town.
- Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon): Take in the city with both modern and traditional elements of Vietnam, while bravely navigating the streets filled with even more motorbikes than Hanoi. I’d suggest visiting the War Remnants Museum and taking a day trip to the Chu Chi Tunnels to learn more about the Vietnam War and experience some of the punishing conditions the soldiers and citizens endured during that time.
Experiences
- Motorbiking: : Embrace your adventurous side by renting motorbikes to see the beauty of the Vietnamese countryside. Highlights for me include motorbiking through Ninh Binh (known as the Ha Long Bay on land), taking the Hai Van Pass from Hue to Hoi An, and exploring the mountainous region surrounding Da Lat including pristine lakes, waterfalls, and coffee plantations.
- Food: Hire a tour guide to take you on a street food tour in each place you visit. This allows you to learn about the local cuisines which vary significantly by region, and enjoy them during your stay.
A Note from Eric:
Visiting Vietnam is a must for any traveler interested in seeing Southeast Asia. Taking in the landscapes, enjoying the food, and learning some of the history while meeting so many hospitable and kind people was unforgettable. I’m happy to continue the ‘Northwood Around the World’ series by sharing my experiences from one of the best trips I’ve ever taken.
