Petra: The Rose-Red City Half as Old as Time
Nestled amidst rugged desert canyons and mountains, Petra stands as a testament to man's ingenuity and the mysteries of ancient civilizations. Known for its intricate rock-cut architecture and its iconic entrance through the Siq, Petra is often referred to as the 'Rose-Red City' due to the color of the stone from which it is carved. This archaeological wonder dates back to 300 B.C. and was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom.
Highlights and Recommendations:
- The Siq: The main entrance to Petra, a dramatic narrow gorge with walls soaring up to 80 meters in height.
- Al-Khazneh (The Treasury): Petra's most famous monument, carved out of a sandstone rock face.
- The Monastery (Ad-Deir): A monumental building carved out of rock, and a challenging but rewarding hike.
- Petra by Night: An enchanting experience where the path to the Treasury is lit by thousands of candles, accompanied by Bedouin music.
A Note from Brad:
"Petra is more than just an archaeological site; it's a journey back in time, a peek into an ancient world full of stories, art, and culture. Walking through its passages, I felt a deep connection with the past and a profound appreciation for the beauty of human creativity. I am honored to kick off the 'Northwood Around The World' series and share my Petra experience with my Northwood family."
